Struggling to engage so far. The world building is frustratingly vague. Though there has been peace for hundreds of years, evidenced by the king traveling with only one companion- for some unclear reason all the characters are quick to pull out weapons at the slightest interruption. It didn’t make sense. And everyone is unaccountably angry at everyone else. There did not seem to be reason for all the aggressive posturing. And the characters’ actions seem to come from a writer’s outline rather than from the characters. I’m at 25% and I’ve yet to meet a character that is likable or behaves in a reasonable manner. Everybody just seems to always be posturing as warriors, but never real. The initial call for rulers to come to the capital is vague in its purpose and from what I can tell makes little sense in terms of governance, and the city/temple has little detail of who lives there. Are there markets? Or common people? What is life like there? For there to be a betrayal, it would have more meaning if we understood how the city normally functions. When it is later deserted, what does that mean? What was it like before? Everything is so vague it feels like reading a fleshed out outline. I need rational characters I can care about. I’m going to stick with it and hope it improves but at the moment it is challenging. My two favorite things: high fantasy and romance! I'm always excited when a new book by this author comes out, but that book being fantasy and romance? Best thing ever! The story was fun and intriguing and I loved all of the different characters. The ending had a very satisfying happily ever after, but with enough left open that a second book could be written (please?). I will definitely be rereading this book!
